Clocking Out After 22 Years: Mary's Retirement

After more than 22 years of service at Sierra View Medical Center, Mary Diaz is retiring from her role as a Certified Processing Technician II.

Mary joined Sierra View Medical Center in June 2004, after her husband, who also worked at Sierra View for 20 years, encouraged her to apply. Having previously worked as a Certified Nursing Assistant, she already knew healthcare was where she wanted to be. What made Sierra View special, however, was the people.

"I love the hospital and the great people I work with," Mary shared. "I enjoyed going through the hallways and seeing everybody with smiles."

Originally from Woodlake, Mary graduated from Woodlake High School before relocating to Lindsay, where she has lived while commuting to Sierra View for more than two decades. During that time, she has enjoyed getting to know the Porterville community and building lasting friendships throughout the hospital.

While many patients never meet the Central Processing team, Mary's work behind the scenes has helped ensure physicians, nurses, and surgical teams have the sterile instruments and equipment they need to provide safe, high-quality care. She played an essential role in cleaning, inspecting, assembling, and sterilizing surgical instruments used throughout the hospital. Every tray prepared by her team helped ensure caregivers had the equipment they needed to safely care for patients.

"We here in Central Processing are the heart of the hospital," Mary said. "Our job is very important."

Mary also appreciates Sierra View's commitment to the community through programs such as the Roger S. Good Cancer Treatment Center, holiday giving initiatives, and back-to-school backpack donations. When reflecting on Sierra View's values, she points to Accountability, sharing that her department works together every day to ensure every instrument is prepared correctly before it reaches a patient.

As she begins retirement, Mary looks forward to spending more time cooking, gardening, bike riding, traveling, and visiting family.
