Sierra View Medical Center Birth Center

Through a combination of personalized nursing services and state-of-the-art equipment, Sierra View Medical Center has become the first choice for expectant parents in Porterville. SVMC uses sophisticated fetal monitoring systems to provide a constant flow of health information of both baby and mother which is great to have for the more than 1,400 deliveries performed each year.

Maternal Child Health Services Include:

  • Labor and delivery care
  • Breastfeeding and nursing education
  • Postpartum support
  • High-risk pregnancy and delivery monitoring
  • Maternal-fetal medicine
  • Infant intensive care
  • Pregnancy and infant loss treatment

Sierra View Medical Center’s 22-bed Family Birth Center is for labor and delivery which adheres to the standards established by First 5 California, an initiative to promote and improve the health of children in the first five years of life.

In partnership with First 5 Tulare County, SVMC is the only South Central Valley hospital to be designated as ‘Baby Friendly’ by implementing the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding interaction and duration. These practices include infants rooming-in with parents to maintain 24 hour interaction and encouraging skin-to-skin bonding between babies with both the mother and father during their stay at the hospital. Part of the ‘Baby Friendly’ protocols include the golden hour where mom and baby have skin-to-skin contact and wait at least 12 hours after delivery for baby’s first bath.

Sierra View Medical Center NICU

Located on the same floor as the Birthing Center is a Level II Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) with a Valley Children’s Hospital staff person on call 24/7. The NICU provides specialized treatment for babies who require advanced medical care born at 32 weeks gestation or older.

Valley Children’s are the leaders in specializing in pediatric and primary care and are dedicated to providing the best care close to home for the children of Central Valley. In fact, they have grown from a 42-bed hospital to one of the largest pediatric healthcare networks in the country.

SVMC’s NICU is also equipped with a telemedicine link where a Valley Children’s Hospital doctor can listen to a baby’s heartbeat, check its blood pressure, and visually observe the baby during the tele-conference with a SVMC NICU nurse.
