Medical Chaperones for Sensitive Ultrasound Exams

At Sierra View Medical Center, we are committed to providing a safe, comfortable, and respectful environment for every patient. We understand that some medical exams may feel more personal than others, and we want you to feel informed about your care.

For certain ultrasound exams, patients have the option to request a trained medical chaperone to be present during their exam.

What Is a Medical Chaperone?

A medical chaperone is a trained Sierra View Medical Center employee who may assist or observe while your sonographer performs a sensitive ultrasound exam.

A medical chaperone can help by:

  • Supporting a professional and respectful environment.
  • Helping patients feel more comfortable during their care.

If you request a medical chaperone, they will remain present throughout your ultrasound exam.

Which Ultrasound Exams Are Considered Sensitive?

An ultrasound is an imaging exam that uses sound waves to create pictures of structures inside the body. During some ultrasound exams, a sonographer may need to examine an area that is considered sensitive. You may also be asked to change into a gown or adjust your position during the exam. Your sonographer can explain what to expect and answer any questions before the exam begins.

At Sierra View Medical Center, patients may request a medical chaperone for ultrasound exams performed by a sonographer involving the following areas:

  • Genitalia: The reproductive organs or surrounding genital area.
  • Breasts: Breast tissue and surrounding areas being examined.
  • Rectum: The lower portion of the digestive tract.
  • Pubic or groin area: The area where the lower abdomen meets the upper thighs.

Medical chaperones are not required for these ultrasound exams but are available upon request.

How to Request a Medical Chaperone

If you would like a medical chaperone present during one of the sensitive ultrasound exams listed above, let your sonographer or another member of your care team know. They can also answer any questions you may have about medical chaperones or what to expect during your exam.
