Coffee Talk with Sierra View Recruiter, Lance Rowell

Keeping patients well cared for is a high priority at Sierra View Medical Center (SVMC). In order to deliver the very best care possible right here in Porterville, the hospital must remain fully staffed to be able to care for any patient walking through the doors of the hospital, emergency room, or any of our outpatient facilities. That is where the role of SVMC’s Recruiter shines.

Departments throughout the hospital work directly with SVMC Recruiter, Lance Rowell, who keeps an office within the hospital. Rowell regularly communicates with Sierra View managers, directors and senior leadership team members to ensure accurate staffing in all areas. “Being in the role of recruiter, the number one organizational goal that I care about is attracting the most talented individuals to our teams,” says Rowell. He is particularly looking for professionals who are ready to find a new career home or seeking to begin their health care career. That includes registered nurses, medical imaging professionals, business administration positions, dietary and janitorial roles. If a position is available at the hospital, Rowell is the person to speak to about a future working for Sierra View Medical Center.

Working non-stop to address staffing issues throughout the pandemic, Rowell says that Sierra View’s value of collaboration has been key. Rowell works directly with Vice President of Human Resources and Marketing, Tracy Canales and HR Manager of Talent Development, Colleen Wilson. Together, they are constantly seeking ways to welcome new talent to Sierra View as well as provide a new career home for more experienced professionals. Additionally, the team is dedicated to finding growth opportunities for current employees and always welcomes job applicants from within the organization. “Our HR team strives to ensure that our staff is getting the daily support they need not only from their leaders but from us directly as the “People Team,” says Rowell. Each person in the HR team plays a different role, and Rowell recognizes that collaboration helps his department do amazing things for SVMC’s more than one thousand employees.

Before working in health care, Rowell worked in the big-box retail and nutrition industries. “My passion for health and wellness became a main driver in my career and when I was given the opportunity to transition into a different sector of the health and wellness industry, I jumped on it,” he says. With a background working with Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) clinics in the Central Valley, Lance arrived at SVMC nearly two years ago ready to learn all things hospital-related.

Currently residing in his hometown of Lindsay, California, Rowell has strong ties to Porterville and surrounding communities. He pursued a business education to help him give back to the community he was born in and loves. Rowell received a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and a Master of Business Administration in Human Resource Management, both from Capella University. He holds two certifications issued by the HR Certification Institute (HRCI); Associate Professional in Human Resources (aPHR) and Professional in Human Resources (PHRca). Rowell actively pursues education opportunities and is currently a member of the LEAD Academy through the Hospital Association of Southern California.

Rowell attributes his strong work ethic to his upbringing by his grandparents. He comes from a family of agriculture professionals. When he is not at the hospital helping with staffing needs or helping with his family’s harvest, he spends time at the gym and with close friends.

Just as Rowell is enjoying his career in health care, he wants to help others understand the many possibilities there are to begin or continue a career in health care at SVMC. There are available positions in registered nursing and clinical fields as well as in business and other support departments. Lance will be hosting a Q&A session on Facebook on Thursday, June 24th to field questions and talk about work life at SVMC. The conversation will be viewable at https://fb.me/e/O7QpXlUK.
