Sara Howard, RN Recognized for Nursing Excellence

It takes a combination of learned technique and a special person at the bedside who exhibits compassion, and makes it a personal goal to keep a patient as comfortable during their hospital stay. This is especially important when patients are on the brink of needing a higher level of care. Sara Howard, RN is this special type of person. As a member of Sierra View’s Medical-Surgical Department, she recently made a significant impact on a patient who was feeling especially uneasy and not able to control his anxiety due to his condition.

Sara stood out during the patient’s stay for taking the extra time to go above and beyond. She guided him through breathing exercises and other forms of helpful tips to help him stay present and relax. Soon, the patient began to see significant improvements in lessening the anxiety that was hindering his recovery. Sara was able to manage other tasks so that she could concentrate on the patient’s recovery that made him feel at ease before it was too late. It was Sara’s nursing technique and caring instincts that provided her with the tools to help deliver the exact care needed to prevent the patient from needing intubation and still find time to help ease the patient’s anxiety.

For the kindness Sara showed this patient, he nominated her for The DAISY Award® For Extraordinary Nurses (The Daisy Award). She was recently recognized for the super-human work that she does everyday and for the exceptional care she is known for.

More about The DAISY Award™

The DAISY Award was created to recognize excellence in nursing across hospitals in the United States to honor the work nurses do for patients and families every day and was created in memory of J. Patrick Barnes who died at age 33 of ITP, an auto-immune disease. The Barnes Family was awestruck by the clinical skills, caring and compassion of the nurses who cared for Patrick, so they created this international award to say thank you to nurses everywhere.
