Welcoming New Class of Internal Medicine Residents on Match Day

Sierra View Medical Center is welcoming the next class of resident physicians who will soon begin training and caring for patients throughout Porterville and Tulare County. The new physicians matched with Sierra View Medical Center’s Graduate Medical Education Internal Medicine Residency Program during the National Resident Matching Program’s Match Day on March 20.

On Match Day, medical school graduates across the country learn where they will continue their training as resident physicians. This year, 13 graduates matched with Sierra View Medical Center and will relocate to the Central Valley to begin their training this July.

Residency programs play an important role in expanding access to healthcare in the region. By training physicians locally, Sierra View Medical Center is helping address the physician shortage while preparing the next generation of doctors who may choose to build their careers here.

“Sierra View Medical Center is proud to welcome these physicians,” said Donna Hefner, President and CEO of Sierra View Medical Center. “Residency programs help build the future of healthcare in our community. By training physicians locally, we are investing in long-term access to care for the patients and families we serve.”

About the Internal Medicine Residency Program

Sierra View Medical Center received approval from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education to establish Graduate Medical Education in September 2020. The Internal Medicine Residency Program welcomed its first class of residents in June 2021, with training beginning in July 2021.

Today, the program includes 40 resident physicians across three training years, and 26 residents have graduated since the program began. At Sierra View Medical Center, resident physicians work alongside attending physicians and care teams while providing supervised patient care throughout the hospital and outpatient clinics.

As the program continues to grow, Sierra View Medical Center remains focused on training physicians who will serve the healthcare needs of the Central Valley.

“Match Day represents the beginning of an important journey for these resident physicians and for our community,” said Nashwan Obad, MD, Sierra View Medical Center's Program Director of the Internal Medicine Residency Program. “At Sierra View Medical Center, we are proud to train the next generation of Internal Medicine physicians who will deliver compassionate, high-quality care to the patients of the Central Valley. Our residency program attracts talented physicians from medical schools across the country and around the world, bringing diverse experiences and perspectives to our community. Just as importantly, we are committed to developing physician leaders who will help shape the future of healthcare through clinical excellence, service, and leadership. We are excited to welcome this new class and look forward to supporting them as they grow into outstanding physicians and leaders in medicine.”

The incoming residents will relocate to the region and begin orientation this summer before starting their clinical training at Sierra View Medical Center, continuing the hospital’s commitment to training physicians and strengthening access to healthcare across the Central Valley.
