What to Expect in Rehabilitation

If you have an upcoming appointment with our Rehabilitation Department, we want to help you understand what you should expect from your first appointment. Whether you are coming in for physical therapy, occupational therapy, or speech therapy, you can expect to be treated with compassion and dedication.

Initial Assessment

A first-time appointment will include an assessment so that your therapist can become familiar with you and your current condition. This will involve a lot of questions about your health and your condition, so that we can better understand your situation. We understand that this can feel like probing. We want to make sure we have all the relevant and detailed information regarding your condition to create a comprehensive treatment plan tailored to your needs.

Common factors the therapist will ask about include:

  • Home environment
  • Work environment
  • Health and dietary habits
  • Activity level
  • Leisure and recreational interests

Setting and Meeting Goals

Along with a verbal assessment, our therapists will perform a detailed physical examination to determine your current level of functionality. Based on what we learn about your diagnosis from the examination, your therapist will work with you to develop goals for your therapy and a treatment plan to start improving your ability to function and mobility.

A similar examination will also take place during each subsequent visit to track and assess your progress. These examinations will tell us when you have met established goals. As you meet your goals, you will move on to the next exercises and treatment levels of your plan to ensure continuous progress.

Education and Follow Up

One of the most essential aspects of treatment is ensuring education on best practices for functionality both in and out of our office. We can teach you special exercises to do at home or work, different ways to perform your daily tasks, and ways to minimize pain and strain to avoid further injuries.

Your therapist will check in with you regularly to develop a discharge plan once you are ready. When you have completed your treatment program, your therapist can work with you to discuss life after therapy and address any questions you may have.
