What to Expect in Rehabilitation

Sierra View Medical Center

If you have an upcoming appointment with Sierra View Medical Center's Rehabilitation Department, we want to help you understand what you should expect from your first appointment, so that you can feel as prepared and comfortable as possible. Whether you are coming in for physical therapy, occupational therapy, or speech therapy, you can expect to be treated with compassion and dedication.

The Initial Assessment

Any first appointment will include an assessment so that your therapist can begin to become familiar with you and your current condition. This will, of course, involve a lot of questions about your health and your condition so that we can better understand your situation.

Common factors the therapist will ask about include:

  • Home environment
  • Work environment
  • Health and dietary habits
  • Activity level
  • Leisure and recreational interests

We understand that this can feel like probing, but we want to make sure we have all the relevant and detailed information regarding your condition to ensure that we can determine a comprehensive treatment plan that is tailored exactly to your unique needs. Also, feel free to return the favor and ask us any questions about your condition or our treatment programs that you need to feel comfortable.

Setting and Meeting Goals

Along with a verbal assessment, our therapists will perform a detailed physical examination to determine your current level of functionality. Based on what we learn about your diagnosis from the examination, your therapist will then work with you to develop goals for your therapy and a treatment plan to begin improving your ability to function and your mobility.

A similar examination will also take place during each subsequent visit so that we can track and assess the progress of your treatment plan. These examinations will tell us when you have met certain goals that were established for you. As you meet your goals, you will move on to the next exercises and treatment levels of your plan to ensure continuous progress.

Education and Follow Up

One of the most essential aspects of any therapy treatment is ensuring that you are educated about best practices for functionality both in and out of our offices. We can teach you special exercises that you can do at home or work, different ways to perform your daily tasks, and ways to minimize pain and strain, avoid further injuries, and expedite the recovery process.

Your therapist will check in with you regularly and work with you to develop a discharge plan once you are ready. When you have completed your treatment program, your therapist can work with you to discuss life after therapy and address any questions you may have.
