Sierra View Launches RN Virtual Mixer Amid Nursing Shortage

Sierra View Medical Center is thinking outside the box to help registered nurses in the nearby area and throughout the country learn more about career opportunities in Porterville, California. On Thursday, February 24, 2022, clinical leaders throughout several nursing departments will come together at 10 a.m. PST for a Zoom meeting welcoming Registered Nurses to learn more about the local health care district. RN participants will have the opportunity to meet nursing leadership and get to know more about the inviting culture Sierra View Medical Center is known for.

Currently, Sierra View Medical Center’s recruitment marketing efforts rely on word-of-mouth resources and a mixture of digital/social media and other traditional approaches. “Sierra View has partnerships with several schools and staff actively goes out to attend career fairs,” says Vice President of Marketing and Human Resources Tracy Canales. “Our own employees are our best recruiters and we reward them,” says Canales. Last year, 47% of our new hires were referred by current employees. Current employees receive a $2,000 referral bonus for identified hard-to-fill positions.

Despite the organization’s success at recruiting with traditional tactics, Sierra View Medical Center and hospitals throughout the nation are experiencing turnover for various reasons. Some include: People have decided to retire earlier than expected; people have decided to leave healthcare altogether; and some clinical staff have left to become travel nurses. The hospital is finding innovative ways to seek new job applicants.

During the pandemic, nurses have put in overtime, extra hours, canceled vacation time, and have accommodated coming in on short notice. The recruitment professionals within the Human Resources department at Sierra View continue looking for ways to increase awareness about the hospital’s impressive retirement benefits and sign-on bonus. Sierra View matches new hires up to 6% on retirement and offers a $10,000 sign-on bonus to registered nurses with 3 or more years of experience.

Local and out-of-state registered nurses are encouraged to attend the Virtual RN Adventure Mixer.
